More and more managers in interim staffing

According to a survey of experts, the umbrella association of German Interim Management (DDIM) based in Münster expects a considerable growth in the interim management branch

For this year, the association is expecting an increase of 25 per cent. As a result, the one billion mark for fees would be reached for the first time.

According to the survey, the fees will mount up to 1.2 billion Euro by the end of the year - as against 925 million Euro in 2012. The most important tasks of the external experts in the executive chair are:

  • reorganisation of companies (24 per cent),
  • filing in vacancies on the executive level (21 per cent),
  • limited-time project management (20 per cent) and
  • process optimisation (16 per cent).

A total of 5,500 interim workers were employed on the executive level in German companies in the previous year. In the opinion of the managers questioned by the association, this figure will even rise to 6,200 people by the end of the year.

They say that the reasons for this are the existing competence with employees and the increasing acceptance in Germany. "Interim managers provide an outstanding mixture of years of management experience and high technical and social competence. The benefits of interim employments are being recognised by more and more German companies,” emphasised Dr. Marei Strack, Chairman of the Board at the DDIM.

In addition, many companies have the subjects of optimisation, increase of efficiency and restructuring on their programmes in the current economic situation. “The companies are pleased to obtain outside knowledge and additional interim management resources for the matching projects", Strack forecasts the development in the branch.

Also, vacant executive posts are not always occupied again. Interim employees could then take over for a certain period and ensure that the succession is accompanied professionally, Michael Pochhammer, member of the board of the association adds. These are primarily interim managers on the first two executive levels.

On average, an interim manager was employed for nearly 140 days in 2012. According to the survey, 60 per cent of those questioned expect a constant amount, with just over one-third of the interim managers even planning on an increased demand for the year.

A certain stability was also seen in the daily rates. According to the survey, an average daily rate of 1,150 Euro was charged in the previous year. 32 per cent of those questioned even charged their clients daily rates between 1,250  and 1,500 Euro, five per cent exceeding the daily rate of 1,500 Euro. For 2013, a slight increase is even being expected.
